International travelers who need to apply for a passport will soon be paying more for a booklet – starting Tuesday, the cost will jump to $110, up from the current $75 – and one San Francisco post office is helping travelers submit applications before time runs out.
The Diamond Heights post office is hosting a one-stop passport fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today to make the sometimes-confusing application process a breeze.
Clerks at the post office at 5262 Diamond Heights Blvd. will answer questions and help customers complete the paperwork so they can be mailed out today.
First-time applicants for a passport book or a passport card – a less-expensive alternative that can only be used for land and sea travel – will need to bring proof of U.S. citizenship and a valid form of photo identification.
Those renewing their passports can satisfy the requirements by bringing in their old passports.
Photographs needed for the application can also be taken at the fair for an additional $15 fee.
No appointments are necessary to receive assistance at the fair, but customers can save time by completing out the application form ahead of time. Forms are accessible at the U.S. Postal Service website at www.usps.com/passport.
