I saw Kamala Harris getting into a Lincoln town car with a driver the other day, and wondered: who’s paying for that car? Is it a state election thing? Is it city police? What other city officials have their own drivers?
“As advised by the SFPD, the DA has a security detail provided by DA investigators,” DA office spokesperson Erica Derryck told me. “We have a unit of DA investigators in our office. They are, for the most part, sworn officers, many of which are former SFPD. Security detail is provided by those individuals.” Derrick couldn’t say much more about how the security detail works, but she did tell me that the DA had a security detail “prior to the fact that she’s running for office.”
What other city officials have their own drivers? According to Sgt. Lyn Tomioka, the SFPD only provides a security detail for two officials: the Chief of Police, George Gascón, and Mayor Gavin Newsom.
