01:02 PM Firefighters quickly extinguished a one-alarm blaze near 16th and Guerrero streets in San Francisco’s Mission District late this morning, a fire dispatcher said.
The fire was reported at 11:24 a.m. at 424 Guerrero St.
Smoke could be seen rising from the back of the building, which is adjacent to the Shell Gas station, said a bartender who answered the phone at Elixir, a bar at that intersection.
The three-story building contains the Cameo House, transitional housing for women and children operated by the Northern California Service League.
Adeena Brown, a caseworker at Cameo House, said the fire started after one of the home’s clients dropped a cigarette on a deck. She said she was typing up a report when firefighters came barreling down the hallway.
“The firefighters knocked out a couple of boards and it was over,” Brown said. “They were so quick. I love them.”
