A San Francisco man was arrested late Wednesday on suspicion of hit-and-run and driving under the influence after allegedly hitting a bicyclist and two cars in downtown San Francisco, police said.
Police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said the driver, 35-year-old Jermaine Standfield, allegedly ran a stop sign in his green Toyota Camry at Grove and Hyde streets and hit a bicyclist at about 11:35 p.m.
Standfield continued on and broadsided a black Hyundai carrying four people at Eighth and Market streets then kept going, Esparza said.
A short time later, Standfield then allegedly failed to stop at the intersection of Natoma and Seventh streets and plowed into a Toyota Prius, Esparza said.
Esparza said Standfield then abandoned the Camry and fled on foot, but was tracked down by police at Sixth and Mission streets.
“Due to the outstanding, hardworking efforts of the officers of the Southern Police Station, the suspect was apprehended,” Esparza said.
A 26-year-old woman in the Prius was hospitalized with minor injuries, Esparza said. The 42-year-old bicyclist and the occupants of the Hyundai were treated at the scene and released.
Police said a witness to the last crash was able to identify Standfield as the driver.
Why he was in such a hurry is still unknown, Esparza said.
“That’s part of the investigation,” he said.
Standfield was booked into jail on three counts of felony hit-and-run, two counts of felony DUI causing injury, and one count of misdemeanor possession of marijuana, according to Esparza.
