A San Francisco Superior Court judge on Monday found a 21-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing another man for no apparent reason last October mentally unfit to stand trial for the murder.
Charlie Foniloa Sekona, of San Francisco, was arrested days after the Oct. 12 stabbing of 49-year-old Eric Buschman.
Buschman had been unloading his truck outside his Excelsior District home in the 300 block of Athens Street after returning from a camping trip when he was stabbed at about 7:40 p.m.
Police and prosecutors said Sekona, who lives with his family less than five blocks away, had just stepped off a bus when for some reason he attacked Buschman then fled.
On Monday, a judge found Sekona unfit for trial based on a court-appointed doctor’s finding that he has paranoid schizophrenia, district attorney’s office spokeswoman Erica Derryck said.
Sekona is due back in court Wednesday for a response from prosecutors about whether they will accept or challenge the finding, Derryck said.
Should prosecutors agree with the finding, Sekona will be sent to a state mental hospital.
