A 46-year-old man was seriously injured late Tuesday in San Francisco’s Mission District during a fight with another man outside the residential hotel where he lived, police said.

The fight was reported just before midnight outside the Hotel Royan at 405 Valencia St.
According to police, the victim was punched and then fell and hit his head on a metal standpipe attached to the outside of the building that is used to fight fires. He was found unconscious and bleeding from the head.

He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.

The attacker fled on foot but was identified by witnesses and a suspect was arrested a few blocks away in the 100 block of Albion Street, police said.

Police identified the suspect as Christopher Grant, 33, of San Francisco.

According to police, Grant, who lives at a residential hotel in the Tenderloin, was on felony probation at the time and also had an outstanding warrant for assault. He was booked on two felony counts of assault and for a probation violation.

The motive for the attack is unknown, police said.
