sfpd_squad.jpg7:58 PM: A woman who was shot by a San Francisco police officer after allegedly driving at him in the South of Market neighborhood this evening is expected to survive, a police spokesman said.

The woman was driving erratically down Folsom Street and struck four other moving vehicles as she approached Langton Street shortly after 5 p.m., police Officer Samson Chan said.

An occupant of one of the other vehicles was injured in one of the crashes and taken to a hospital for treatment, according to Chan.

He said a responding plainclothes officer was standing in the area when the suspect, who had a dog in her vehicle, noticed him and started driving at him. The officer, who had his police star on his outer-most clothing, then fired at her in self-defense, Chan said.

“The lady driving this vehicle aimed her vehicle at the officer and started driving toward him, and that’s when he was left with no choice but to discharge his firearm to defend his life,” Chan said.

The officer was not injured.

The suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment and is expected to survive, Chan said.

Police Chief George Gascon was among Police Department personnel to respond to the area following the shooting.

Stacie Daniels, who said she is a doctor who lives in the Soma neighborhood, was at nearby BrainWash Cafe when the incident unfolded.

“I thought, ‘Oh, they’re shooting a movie,”” Daniels said.

She said that following the gunfire, two or three people ran into the cafe and hit the ground.

Chan said it wasn’t immediately clear whether the suspect was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and that the shooting remains under investigation.
