Students in San Francisco will bike to school this morning in the second annual citywide event promoting safety, physical health and environmental sustainability.

More than 30 schools will participate in “Bike to School Day,” according to the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. Parents, teachers and bicycling advocates will also join in.

The event will also highlight a $500,000 federal grant program, Safe Routes to School, aimed at increasing the number of students walking or biking to school.

In the Sunset District, Supervisor Carmen Chu will join students for a ride from 28th and Lawton streets to Sunset Elementary School at 1920 41st Ave. at 8 a.m.
