The shooting happened at about 10 a.m. when a gunman walked up to an open garage at 83 Arleta Ave. and opened fire, hitting three men and a woman, police Capt. Louis Cassanego said.

The shooter, described as a black male in his late teens, then ran to a waiting brownish sport utility vehicle or minivan driven by a second person and fled, Cassanego said.

The victims were taken to San Francisco General Hospital. Police initially said one man suffered life-threatening injuries, but hospital spokeswoman Marti Paschal said all four victims were in stable condition as of 12:45 p.m.

At least 10 shell casings were recovered at the scene of the shooting. Police Officer Albie Esparza said it appears the shooting was gang-related. No arrests have been made.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m., Mayor Gavin Newsom arrived at the crime scene. Newsom, who had just attended a groundbreaking ceremony in the nearby Bayview District, spoke briefly with investigators before leaving sometime before noon.

A woman who said she was a family member of the victims arrived at the home shortly after 11 a.m. She said the victims were the sons and daughter of an elderly woman who lived at the home and were caring for her after she recently suffered a stroke.

The elderly woman was taken out of the two-story home on a stretcher at about 11:45 a.m.
Cassanego described the neighborhood as “blue-collar” and usually “pretty quiet.”
