10 AM: Appeal reporter Chris Roberts was apparently glued to Twitter last night, as the Beach/Park Chalet-adjacent area of Golden Gate Park was, in his words, “crawling with cops.”
The reason? According to broadcast media reports, around 10 PM last night, police were called to the area behind Park Chalet after a reported sexual assault on a woman. They discovered the woman unconscious and suffering from head injuries, who was taken to the hospital.
Police have been searching the area since, and have detained two men “for questioning” — they’re reportedly looking for two more.
10:55 AM: More details from Bay City News — the incident, they, report happened around 9 PM Monday night, in what sounds like the area commenter blooms referred to as “dark and isolated” and “concealed by brush and cannot be seen from the road.”
Police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said the woman had been at the restaurant with friends and family since about 4 PM, and the group had dispersed in different directions shortly after 9.
When a female friend went to check on the woman, she heard some moaning in the bushes behind the chalet. She went and told a male relative of the woman, who went to find her, using his cell phone to light the way, Esparza said.
“It was 70 feet back, and it was pitch dark,” Esparza said. The relative found three men near the woman, who was lying on the ground, and a fourth man standing nearby.
The relative confronted them, and they ran off, Esparza said.
Police searched the area and detained two men for questioning, but they were not arrested, Esparza said.
The woman was hospitalized for minor injuries to her head.
Police are still investigating the details of the incident.
“It’s not a confirmed sexual assault,” said Esparza. “We’re still trying to gather that information to make a determination.”
