wave.jpgFederal agencies continue to warn coastal residents and visitors that conditions at Bay Area beaches are expected to be cold and dangerous over the next couple of days.

The National Weather Service extended a surf advisory previously set to expire Wednesday to remain in effect until 4 p.m. today. Breaking waves are forecast to be between 15 and 20 feet, producing rip currents and beach erosion at Bay Area shorelines.

The U.S. Coast Guard advised people to avoid going near beaches or low-lying coastal areas, warning that large waves can unexpectedly overtake swimmers or beachgoers.

Both agencies predicted unseasonably cool temperatures would persist over the weekend.
