PG&E crews are expected to work until Friday night to replace up to 800 feet of underground cable in San Francisco’s South of Market District after two power outages in the past month knocked out power to portions of the Bay Bridge, a utility spokesman said today.
The most recent outage began at about 5:45 a.m. Wednesday when a section of the underground cable failed near the intersection of Second and Harrison streets, PG&E spokesman Joe Molica said.
Lights went out on the western portion of the Bay Bridge, including in the Treasure Island tunnel, and power was knocked out to about 1,360 PG&E customers in SOMA, Molica said.
Power was restored to all customers shortly after noon, he said.
Another outage occurred on Feb. 21, knocking out lights on the bridge for more than two hours that evening.
No crashes were reported on the bridge in connection with either outage.
Crews were out today near the intersection of Second and Harrison streets and will return for most of the day Friday to replace between 600 and 800 feet of the cable, Molica said.
He said crews are being “proactive” by replacing cable beyond the faulty portion to prevent similar events from happening again in the future.
