Elsewhere: Suicide draws crowd at Powell and Market Ex

A man died after apparently jumping from a building near the cable car turnaround at Powell and Market streets in San Francisco this afternoon, a police lieutenant said.

Police received multiple reports of a man on a ledge at 10 Cyril Magnin St., a multi-use building with residential lofts and business offices. Officers stopped pedestrians from walking by the building and a hostage negotiator quickly arrived, Lt. Lyn Tomioka said.

However, the negotiator was unable to reach the man, who was on a ledge of a unit on the top floor of the building and it appears he jumped at about 3:25 p.m., Tomioka said.

“It was too quick,” she said. “By the time they got there, determined the doors were locked, they couldn’t make any contact with him.”

The man, who was only wearing underwear, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tomioka said it wasn’t immediately clear whether he lived or worked at the building.

She said there was no indication as to what prompted the incident and that the medical examiner’s office will work to confirm that he intentionally jumped.
