9:06 AM: A 65-year-old man who was fatally shot by an officer in San Francisco on Saturday after he allegedly came at police with a machete has been identified today by the medical examiner’s office as Edward Smith.
At about 5:25 p.m., two Ingleside District police officers went to a home on Maynard Street in response to a call about a man who was drinking alcohol and taking medications, police Lt. Lyn Tomioka said.
When officers tried to check on the man, he confronted them with a machete, she said.
Witnesses said the officers gave verbal warnings and commands, but the man continued to advance, according to Tomioka. One officer fired three shots at the man and hit him.
The officers requested an ambulance and began administering CPR, but the man died at the home, Tomioka said.

Police Chief George Gascon will hold a press conference Monday at noon at the Hall of Justice, room 551, to discuss the incident.
A community meeting will be held later this week.
