The death of a 34-year-old man whose body was found Monday in a Mission District residential hotel has been ruled a homicide, police said.

The victim has been identified by the medical examiner’s office as Rodney Curiel.

Police said the manager of the hotel, located at 520 S. Van Ness Ave., entered Curiel’s room at about 10 a.m. Monday and found him dead.

It was later determined that he had been strangled, police Inspector Daniel Dedet said.

Dedet said Curiel was originally from Napa County and had been living at the hotel for several months. The motive for the killing remains unknown.

“It’s still a mystery to us,” Dedet said.

No arrests have been made in the case.

The killing is San Francisco’s third murder this year.
