Holiday greetings from the Richmond!

Christmas is just around the corner so I’m sure many of us are rushed for time, trying to fit in shopping, planning, cooking… This week I learned about The Golden Crust, a pie company started by two dames with a Charlie’s Angels flair. Fresh, homemade pies in traditional flavors, and some with a special twist (aka Pumpkin Bourbon). They’re taking holiday orders now and you can pick up your pies in the Richmond District or in Bernal Heights. Cafe au chocolat with caramelized hazelnuts, anyone?

I interviewed a talented and ego-less (!) musician recently named David Greco. He has a new album out called The Art of Disassembly that I think you’ll enjoy. He’s got a dog named Paul McCartney and got help from some members of The Fray on this latest album. Read more about David and listen to some of his new music.

Have you had your first dungeness crab yet? ‘Tis the season but with the economy the way it is, you might not be indulging in this SF tradition. Fear not – Wing Hing Seafood Market on Clement has it for cheap, though you’ll have to kill and clean the crab yourself. But don’t worry, I have a nice instructional video for you over on the blog. You’re a San Franciscan – a little crab guts won’t hurt you!

I’m not sure if the Richmond was one of the first to get them, but I had very mixed feelings about the sight of new phone books on my stairs. They seem superfluous in this era of the internet and smartphones with apps for everything under the sun. So I polled readers on what they plan to do with them. Place your bets – what percentage sent theirs right to the blue bin?

I’ll leave you this week with a lovely documentary on one of the oldest businesses in the neighborhood, Paul’s Hats. It’s been going strong for 90 years and was recently taken over by four young women. Check out “We Continue in the Old Style” below, directed by Stanford student John Rory Fraser. You’ll be transported back to an earlier time…

Your next Richmond Report will come after the New Year. Happy holidays to everyone!
