Happy Holidays from the Richmond!

The twelfth month is upon us and the Richmond District is already getting in the spirit. Er, sort of. Tonight only, catch a showing of 1974’s cult thriller “Black Christmas” at the 4-Star Theater on Clement Street. If you like a little gore with your holidays mixed in with terrorized sorority girls, this is the flick for you.

Staying with the cinema… The Balboa Theater will have a one-week run of the critically acclaimed documentary “La Danse” which takes you behind the scenes of the Paris Opera Ballet company as they prepare seven different shows. The NYTimes calls it one of the finest dance films ever made. Starts this Friday – check out the trailer.

Only 22 more days until Christmas! You may be out picking up your tree this weekend, but try something different this year for your wreath: make it yourself. The Botanical Garden has a wreath making workshop this Saturday where you can use greens and cuttings straight from the Garden to craft your masterpiece. No experience necessary!

On Sunday, stop by Golden Gate Park again for the pottery and craft sale at the Sharon Art Studio. It’s right next to the children’s playground so tell the kids you’re taking them to the park and then do a little shopping for yourself. 😉

Part of getting ready for the holidays is making way for the new gifts that will come into your life. So don’t miss Saturday’s free ewaste recycling event at Ocean Beach. A great chance to get rid of those old PCs, fax machines and VCRs that are taking up closet space.

Lots of exciting changes are afoot in some of our neighborhood parks. Lincoln Park’s fully renovated children’s playground will open in March of next year. Just down the path are the landmark Lincoln Steps which are being restored by a group of neighbors. And across the district there are fancy plans to makeover the Beach Chalet soccer fields – synthetic turf, night lights, new restrooms… Where was this initiative when I was playing there in high school and tripping over the gopher holes? 🙂

Have a great weekend everyone!
