U.S. Magistrate Judge Richard Seeborg of San Jose was confirmed by the U.S. Senate this morning to the post of a district judge, according to Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-California.

Seeborg, 52, of Palo Alto, was nominated by President Obama in August to be a district, or trial, judge, with lifetime tenure on the U.S. District Court for Northern California.

A court spokeswoman said that for the time being, Seeborg will hear cases in both the San Francisco and San Jose branches of the district court.

Seeborg has served as a magistrate judge in San Jose since 2001.

He previously worked for the law firm of Morrison and Foerster in San Francisco and Palo Alto and as a federal prosecutor in San Jose.
