Fourteen adults and three children were displaced by a fire early this morning in the city’s Bayview District.

The one-alarm fire was reported at 12:01 a.m. at a home near La Salle Avenue and Newhall Street, and was controlled at 12:18 a.m., a fire dispatcher said.

The American Red Cross is assisting the 17 displaced residents, Red Cross spokeswoman Melanie Finke said this morning.

“We went down to the scene and provided them with blankets and comfort kits,” Finke said. Comfort kits, she explained, contain basic necessities such as toothpaste, a toothbrush, soap and a hairbrush.

The Red Cross has also arranged a place for the displaced family to stay.

“Because it was such a large number of individuals, we were able to put them in several rooms at a hotel,” Finke said.

The fire department was not immediately available this morning to provide additional details on the blaze.
