San Francisco Postmaster Noemi Luna will hold a meeting today to solicit community input about potential service location changes in the Civic Center area.
Luna will be at the Federal Building Postal Station from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. to discuss plans to consolidate that location with other post offices nearby, U.S. Postal Services spokesman James Widgel said.
The consolidations are a response to a nationwide drop in postal service revenue and mail volume nationwide.
The Federal Building site is not widely used, and the decision to consolidate it is based on revenue and walk-in visits, Widgel explained.
There might be extenuating circumstances the district is not aware of, though, which is why the public is being asked to comment today.
Widgel said it would be premature to say which locations would be consolidated in addition to the Federal Building site, but there are several nearby that are being studied.
The U.S. Postal Service delivered 12.7 percent less mail nationwide in 2009, Wigdel said. Revenue has declined from $71.8 billion in 2008 to $68.1 billion in 2009.
He said the decrease is due to the economy and the digital age, and that the postal service has already consolidated routes to compensate.
Retail services are the next item to be evaluated. There are 40 post office stations and branches in San Francisco.
Today’s meeting will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the California Room on the second floor of the Phillip Burton Federal Building, 450 Golden Gate Ave.
