The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for all Bay Area beaches and shorelines beginning tonight.
The advisory will go into effect at 10 p.m. in advance of the arrival at the California coast of a large northwest swell generated by a powerful storm in the Gulf of Alaska, forecaster Rick Canepa said.
Wave heights in the “swell train” are forecast to range between 17 and 19 feet at the break, Canepa said, and up to 20 feet in the surf zone.
Dangerous rip currents are also expected to accompany the high surf.
Beaches and shorelines in Sonoma, Napa, Marin, San Francisco, Contra Costa, Alameda, San Mateo and Monterey counties will be impacted.
The Weather Service advisory will be in effect until 10 a.m. Sunday.
