Heavy fog in San Francisco caused the cancellation of today’s Blue Angels air show, a spokeswoman for Fleet Week said.

The jets, part of a naval demonstration squad, are not allowed to be flown in air shows when fog has settled below 1,500 feet, according to Mary Hickey, spokeswoman for Fleet Week, San Francisco’s part of a tour meant to maintain public interest in the Navy.

The pilots took off from San Francisco International Airport shortly before the scheduled 3 p.m. show today, but determined that the fog was well below 1,500 feet and returned to the airport, Hickey said.

She said the squad plans to fly again during Sunday’s 3 p.m. show unless the heavy fog is again an issue.
