3:59 PM: A San Francisco woman who died early this morning after being struck by a car was identified by the medical examiner’s office as 24-year-old Melissa Dennison.

Dennison was crossing Fell Street at Broderick Street at about 6:20 a.m. when she was hit by a four-door Honda traveling west on Fell Street, according to police spokeswoman Sgt. Lyn Tomioka.

It was not immediately clear whether Dennison had been in a crosswalk at the time, nor whether she was crossing on a green light, Tomioka said.

The impact threw her “a significant distance” from the intersection, she said.

The 19-year-old man driving the Honda stopped at the scene and was not arrested, though Tomioka said prosecutors could weigh charging him “because the driver is required to drive with due caution,” she said.

“Apparently, another car had stopped (for the woman) at the intersection and this vehicle went around it,” Tomioka said. She said the Honda could have been behind the other vehicle or in an adjacent lane.

Tomioka said the driver lives in the Peninsula but was heading to work in San Francisco at the time. Alcohol or drugs is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation, and police are still interviewing witnesses, Tomioka said.
