5:09 PM: A man who drove his truck into the water off of Treasure Island this afternoon has died at a local hospital, San Francisco fire Lt. Ken Smith said.

The truck plunged into the water on the northeast side of the island near Avenue N at about 1:45 p.m., according to Smith. The vehicle was apparently traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the crash, he said.

The driver, a man between the ages of 30 and 40 years old, was the sole occupant of the truck, according to Smith.

A rescue squad from the fire department left the station at Folsom and 19th streets and reached the scene of the crash minutes later with diving equipment on, Smith said.

Crews broke a window of the truck, which was about 30 feet off of the shore and submerged about 10 feet underwater, and the man was extricated from the vehicle at about 2:10 p.m., according to Smith.

The victim was unconscious and was not breathing when he was taken ashore to a waiting ambulance that took him to the hospital, Smith said. Emergency crews performed CPR at the scene and en route to the hospital, where the victim died shortly after arriving.

The U.S. Coast Guard also responded to the crash and has launched an investigation into a possible pollution threat caused by the vehicle in the water, according to Lt. j.g. Jeremy Pichette.
