The low-key and discreet exterior of Giovanni’s Pizza Bistro – located at 3839 Mission @ Crescent Street – does not give justice to the delicious pizza, yummy desserts, and friendly environment that lies inside. With its rich and tasty pizza (made from original recipes), pasta dishes, and house specials, Giovanni’s is definitely the place to be.

On May 15, 2008, Maricela and Ricardo Perez bought Giovanni’s Pizza from previous Greek owners John and Olga. Though they kept the same namesake, Maricela and Ricardo have transformed the small pizza parlor completely, giving the place a fresh (but still homey) new look.

The new look has come with new dishes and pizza recipes, which fall nothing short of creative — and delicious. With the price of the pizzas topping off at $25 for an extra large, prices are all reasonable and comfortable, especially given the generous amount of food that comes with each juicy dish.

Some of my personal favorite pizzas are the ‘Pesto Chicken Bliss’ and the ‘Succulent Shrimp,’ which is nothing short of a little slice of heaven. For those who prefer something other than a slice of pie, Giovanni also offers several pasta dishes, house specials such as ‘Lamb Rigatoni ($12.45)’ and awesome starters. My favorite is the fried calamari ($9.50), which comes with a great tangy chipotle sauce created by Maricela herself.

Maricela loves creating her own recipes, and has even made a menu of dessert pizzas, which she has received recognition for. The personal cheesecake on the dessert menu is also to die for, might I add.

Whether you want to gather with friends to watch a Niner game on a flat screen, or enjoy the weekend at a homey restaurant with friendly owners, visit Giovanni. I promise you’ll keep coming back.

Giovanni’s website includes a full menu, restaurant hours, and a link to request your order online.
