The website for start up automaker Local Motors hints at a new future of auto engineering: “What If, we build the car of your dreams, it was green, we build it in your town, we listened, and we did.”

Local Motors is bringing its open source, DIY model to the serpentine streets of San Francisco. Anyone can submit the San Francisco design as long as it meets the three requirements: it has to be electric, has to have shooting breaks, and has to capture the “true essence of San Francisco.” I do imagine designers might quibble with the last requirement, as San Francisco’s true essence usually comes with two wheels and a derailleur.

Still it is a refreshing model for an industry in dire need of a facelift. I just can’t wait to see what the Cleveland model will look like.
