As you know from reading internet websites, today Lombard Street (you know, the one you drive your parents down when they come visit) was turned into a gigantic version of the game Candy Land.

If I don’t bring it up right now, I’m afraid my parents will: When I was five, I stacked the deck in Candy Land. True story. My dad and I were going to play a game before bedtime, so I set it up, put “Molasses Swamp” in the deck as card number two and went to take my bath. I still remember yelling “I already shuffled the cards, Dad!” through the bathroom door. I would not have been a good spy.

We sit down to play, and I generously say he can go first. The I go, pull Molasses Swamp, and it’s pretty much game over, man. “You stacked the deck!” my dad yells. I was nailed.

Anyway, the kids who won today, the “yellow team,” came from behind to win WITHOUT cheating, passing the “blue team.” You can see the thrilling conclusion, here:

And here’s an interview with the winning, yellow team, all of whom are patients at the UCSF Children’s Hospital. “It was like the Super Bowl, it was insane” said photo/videographer Tim Ehhalt.

We spoke briefly with King Kandy at the Chocolate Swamp, AKA Dr. Bernardo Gonzalez, DDS. That’s right, King Kandy is a dentist. We asked him how he ascended to the throne, and he said “I walked into work one day and it was decided for me.” Some have greatness thrust upon them, Dr. Gonzalez.
