Employing the cheap metaphor, an East Bay woman has found herself in a hairy situation.

In 1999, Lisa Gautier and her husband founded Matter of Trust, a non-profit which collects human hair and turns it into “hair mats,” which soak up spilled oil. The mats are suprisingly good at mopping up overflowing oil, but have yet to prove their worth in mopping up overflowing hair. The Gautiers have 18,000 pounds of excess hair and Mr. Gautier, in his own words, “really, really wants not to have the hair.”

The Gautiers are calling upon philanthropists to cease their rampant scissoring, and instead donate commercial real estate space where they could store all the hair. I’m sure they might also accept the services of a particularly crafty individual who could weave hair into a sturdy, ridge tent.
