San Francisco police tonight are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a 27-year-old man wanted in connection with a Tuesday carjacking that followed a botched robbery attempt of a West Portal bank.

Police Sgt. Lyn Tomioka said the suspect entered the Bank of America in the 200 block of West Portal Avenue at about 3:30 p.m. and unsuccessfully attempted to rob the bank.

He then allegedly carjacked a red 2006 Honda Accord before fleeing the area, Tomioka said, adding that the suspect brandished a gun during the carjacking.

The suspect has been identified as David Wehrer, police said. The stolen vehicle is a red 2006 Honda Accord with California license No. 5TCV308. (See the SFPD sheet on this suspect here.)

Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to call Sgt. Braconi or Sgt. Jaimerena at (415) 553-1201, or the operations center at (415) 553-1071. Tomioka said Wehrer should be considered armed and dangerous.
