Police have taken fewer firearms from SF criminals this year, and yet the City’s homicide rate is down almost 25 percent

From January to June, Police have seized 525 firearms compared to 597 in the same time period last year. Despite the reduction in gun seizures, the City’s homicide count fell from 52 in the first half of 2008 to 25 in the first half of 2009.

Sergeant Tony Chaplin of the Police Department’s Gang Task Force told the Examiner that prosecution of high level gang members is more likely the cause of the drop than gun seizures.

It’s like the NRA has always said: Guns don’t kill people; high ranking gang members with guns kill people.
