1232012832womensmurderclubmain.jpgSan Francisco’s chief medical examiner said today that a body found Monday in McLaren Park is that of a man and not a woman, as previously thought.

A San Francisco Recreation and Park Department crew made the gruesome find at about 10:30 a.m. Monday near a homeless encampment at Sunnydale and Persia avenues, in a hilly area on the western side of the park.

The crew made the discovery after spotting a leg sticking out from beneath a blue tarp. Police were notified and excavated the entire body.

Police reported Tuesday that the body was that of a woman, but the medical examiner said further examination proved otherwise.

“I can confirm the remains have been examined and it has been determined to be a male,” Dr. Amy Hart said today.

Hart said it is not known how long the body had been underground.

She said the man has not yet been identified, and that his age and manner of death have also not been determined.

Police homicide inspectors are involved in the investigation, but the death has not been officially declared a homicide.
