OK, SERIOUSLY, THIS IS IT: Another great gallery of photos from the scene here, also by Mike Cohen, whose tweeted pic appeared in our gallery earlier this evening. Also, the Chronicle filed their report, nothing we don’t know already.

WE LIED ONE MORE: Michael Brandvold has a great gallery of the (now cleared) scene. He says

Cab crashed into two cable cars at the Powell St. turn around. June 4, 2009. Cab apparently lost it’s brakes on Powell St. and rather then run into the crowd of people at the turn around, slammed into the cable cars.

We reached out to Michael, who tells us “I did not witness, but was told this by someone who claimed to be told this at the scene.”

FINAL UPDATE: Muni spokesperson Judson True tells us that as of 7:11, the scene’s been cleared and regular cable car service has resumed. Good, because we’re missing Game 1 with all this journalism crap.

UPDATE: CBS5 has video of the scene. It’s about what you’d expect. And the Examiner has filed a report, only news there is that the three Muni operators and the cable car driver involved in the accident were transported to SF General.

UPDATE: Is today “drive on the tracks” day? Because MuniDiaries has another misguided driving situation for this evening, this one on the J tracks at San Jose and Mission.

UPDATE: As you can see in the new images in the twitter image gallery we’ve pulled together, the cab’s been moved and the damage to the cable car is revealed. Maybe that cab company can become one of those cable car sponsors we’ve been hearing about.

UPDATE: Not really an update, just a question — how the hell did the cab get down there? Speculation in the Appeal office is leaning toward “new cabbie.” Anyone see the incident? If so, comment!

Greg Dewar says: zomg what a dumbass! I’ve seen this happen before I’ll post a link.

UPDATE: The Twitter People say:

peahayes: Cab wrecked into cable car in a no car zone – cable car turn around at Powell St

ehew83: Random a taxi hit a cable car right in the middle of the Powell turnaround. How did it even get there?

leo mariveles: WOW…a SF taxi cab came down Powell st and crashed into a parked cable car. Now none of the cable cars are running. Stupid fckn cab driver

Jen Braginsky: I never really have a need to hang on the side of a cable car again.

We just got this from Muni:

As of 5:07 p.m., regular cable car service on the Powell Street portion of the Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason cable car lines has been disrupted by a collision between a taxi and two cable cars on Powell between Ellis and Market.

Bus shuttles are providing substitute service between Market and Washington.

The cable cars were reportedly stationary at the time of the collision.

Three Muni Operators who were on the vehicles are reporting injuries, as is the driver of the taxi. None have been transported to the hospital so far.

You’ll know more when we do.

This might be a good time to plug our MuniAlerts twitter feed?
