Happy John Wildermuth Day: Local Opinion Roundup

On May 22nd – I mean, John Wildermuth Day – columnists want us to think of the children, firefighters, and Guantanamo Bay.

Carlos Garcia and Margaret Brodkin believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way… no, but really, we cannot let the recession and other current events distract us from issues of education.

Customs is going to implement new passport rules, and this time, they’re totally serious.

Obama stated the obvious re: Guantanamo Bay yesterday. It was kind of embarrassing, but he hit all of the right points.

Gavin Newsom has proclaimed May 22nd John Wildermuth day, since the Chron political reporter is taking political retirement after almost twenty five years of front line reporting.

Obama administration seems like it is adopting the “Don’t Make Any Sudden Decisions, Don’t Tell” approach re: “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” In other words, everything is very quiet right now.

Oakland will not let soon-to-be-firefighters graduate. The recruits say they understand the budget crisis and being laid off, but are pissed that they won’t even get their badges.

What did we miss? Let us know.
