If you can’t afford an $80 ticket to see Wicked but the summer’s blockbuster body count in movie theaters is not to your palate, try the 6th annual San Francisco International Arts Festival. It’s a series of world class performers in a widespread offering of locations including the Herbst Theatre, the Cowell Theatre and the Luggage Store. Tickets are generally around $20 and there are performances free in Union Square every day until May 31st.

I was fortunate to catch Gretchen Garnett and Dancers and was quite pleasantly surprised to see their innovative and heartfelt dance piece, Just Passing Through. Their choreography (a team effort according to their program) was fresh, dynamic and somehow furnished a mood of intimacy; no small feat considering they were performing in Union Square at noon. But that’s just the tip of the very talented iceberg of a festival we are very fortunate to smash against.

What: San Francisco International Arts Festival
